I don't know why I have never tried to make bagels before, they look difficult but at the end of the day they are just rolls with holes. In my total ignorance I have only recently discovered that bagels are boiled first which I think is what inspired me to make them. They were super easy to do although the bit in the recipe about making a hole with a wooden spoon then twirling them round it to get the hole size was a bit of a faff. You can shape them easier with your fingers.
I was quite chuffed with these and didn't deviate too much from the recipe but think there is room for improvement and when I come up with a refined version I shall post it up here.

Happy Bagel Friday everyone!
homemade bagels - now thats impressive.....ignoring the first attempt, mutant bagel asthetics for a minute - how do they taste?
ReplyDeleteI thought they were pretty good really. They had the chewy outer and the denser dough centre. What I would do next time is cover them and let prove a second time after shaping as I think they could have done with more air inside them.
ReplyDeleteFantastic. Ive never even considered making bagels before, they certainly look pretty tasty in the photo.
ReplyDeleteMMMMMMM....Your bagels look so lovely & yummie :)!!!
ReplyDeleteohhh. i give you credit! not sure why i haven't tried my hand in making these yet. maybe b/c it's so much easier and cheaper to walk a block to get the freshest, tastiest bagels from bergen st. bagel? these look fluffy and delish!
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to have a go at making bagels. I must say, I would have been very tempted to have a go at the spoon technique for making the holes!
ReplyDeleteI've tried this before, but not for years. Mine weren't as successful as yours...maybe I just had a bad recipe.
ReplyDeleteThe hardest part is boiling them without completely destroying the shape.
They were quite easy but I must say I did not try too hard with making them perfect as it was my first go (hence all the knobbly bits!)
ReplyDeleteI think with this recipe you could get a good shape to them, the dough was very workable.
